Tibet – 60 years of occupation is 60 years too long

The Sami president Aili Keskitalo expresses deep concern on the situation in Tibet. 10th of March, this year marks 60 years of Chinese occupation of Tibet. The oppression of fundamental human rights has been a never-ending experience for the Tibetan people in this period. Tibetans have fought and are still fighting for their human rights and cultural dignity, their language, history and religion. The Tibetan people are fighting for the right to a past, the right to a present and the right to a future.

– The Chinese authorities must engage with the Tibetan Government in exile with the aim of guaranteeing Tibet genuine autonomy, says Aili Keskitalo.

HH Dalai Lama visited Sápmi after the inauguration of the Sami Parliament 30 years ago and thus contributed to the political recognition of the Sami Parliament and the Sami people.

– The Sami people has a long tradition and an obligation to highlight the situations for other peoples and nations that suffer and live under oppression, says Keskitalo.

President Keskitalo calls upon Norway to keep up the dialogue on human rights and Tibet. She urges the international society to continue the efforts to end the Chinese occupation and militarization of Tibet.

– We must never forget Tibet and we must remember to raise the issue until justice prevails for the Tibetans, says the Sami President.
