Good Morning, Chair. Buorre iđit, buorit olbmot!

I just greeted you in the language of my heart, the Northern Sami Language. The Sami people is the Indigenous People in Northern Europe.

I am the President of the Sami Parliament in Norway. I represent the Indigenous Peoples in the Arctic in the Steering Committee of the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL), and co-chair the Steering Committee.

I am proud of the achievements of the IYIL, made by Indigenous Peoples in partnership with states, UN agencies, especially UNESCO, and others. The Strategic Outcome Document gives an overview of the experiences of the IYIL, and directions for continued efforts.

I encourage you to support an International Decade for Indigenous Languages. A Decade will improve life quality and society wellness of Indigenous Peoples. For Indigenous Peoples to fully enjoy Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, we must eliminate discrimination against Indigenous Languages.

The world is facing a digital leap. More and more of our communications take place on digital platforms, and Indigenous Languages must conquer those. Technological development offer new tools for learning and language use, when developed in cooperation with language communities.

Finally, I call for UNESCO to follow up on United Nations resolution (A/RES/71/321) on enhancing the participation of Indigenous Peoples’ representatives and institutions in meetings of relevant United Nations bodies on issues affecting them.

To put it in the spirit of the IYIL: Nothing about us without us.

Giitu. Thank you.
